Asdee GAA Football Club - Scór

Its more than 25 years since Scór first saw the light of day. It all began as the brainchild of Corkman Derry Gowan. Since then thousands have been bitten by the bug, spending long nights in cold halls and community centres planning and rehearsing in the quest of ultimate honours. We always look forward to Scór for we know that an outstanding evening of entertainment is guaranteed, let it be in the Green Glens, Millstreet or even our own community centre in Asdee where many a scór item was born before blossoming into a county final and coming to fruition on the provincial stage.
When it comes to scór locally there is one name that crops up immediatly; elected first scór officer of St. Marys Asdee in January 1992, John Paul Galvin has done enormous work down through the years and has single handedly organised this event, making sure that the club are represented in scór each year.

Scor Sinsear 2007

Some of the activities last weekend were indoors with the social and cultural activity of the North Kerry Football Board holding the Senior Scor Finals at the local Community Centre where a good sized crowd were in attendance on Saturday night last February 3rd. O Sullivans Agri Supplies, Kilcolman sponsored the event which was another marvelous nights entertainment with the very best of music song dance and act displayed by top class performers. Now despite the high standard of competition the only disappointing aspect of the night was that only 5 clubs took part (one less than last year) Ballylongford, Ballydonoghue, Beale. Tarbert and Asdee. Once again North Kerry Board Scor Officer Jackie Walsh was as usual a very capable Fear an Ti keeping everything running smoothly.

The presentation of trophies were made to all the winners by North Kerry Board Vice Chairman Tom O Sullivan sponsor of the event. Tom was in fact performing his last official duties as an Officer of the North Kerry Board having this year decided to take a well earned break after serving the Board over a 14 year stint.
The local club who took part in 3 of the 7 catagories were very successful on the night winning North Kerry titles in Solo Singing, in which Anna Maria Tydings gave a superb rendering of the very popular, Ballybunion Town. The Question Time team of Mick Rea, Nodie Hennessy and Mike O Connor proved the best quiz team on the night while the Novelty Act team of Nora Stack Anna, Maria Tydings, Gerdie O Carroll, Mattie Quinn and Jack Hennessy continued their great success in this catagory with the title, Dead Mens Shoes. To cap a magnificent night for the club they were awarded the Best Overall Club of the night Award which was sponsored by Billy and Mary Enright,Estuary Print Ballylongfore.

The following were all the winners on the night who will now go forward to the County Semi Finals which will be staged in the Community Centre Abbeydorney on Saturday February 24th.

Figure Dancing: Beale
Solo Singing: Asdee Anna Maria Tydings
Recitation: Beale Noel Finucane
Ballad Group: Ballydonoghue
Novelty Act: Asdee
Question Time: Asdee Mike Rea, Nodie Hennessy and Mike O Connor
Set Dancing: Beale

Once again the local club did a fantastic job in organising the competition in what is now an annual event and great credit is due to Scor Officer Mattie Quinn Kathleen Carmody, Bernie Doran Eddie Anthony Walsh and John Pius Walsh who left no stone unturned to make sure everything was in order for this very popular competition.

Scor Na bPaisti

There was great disappointment when it was announced that Scor Na bPaisti which is a National School Competition and has been running for the past 2 years will not be going ahead this year. This had proved to be a very popular competition and was ran on the same rules of Scor. Certainly for the past 2 years the local Community Centre was packed to capacity for the staging of the event for the North Kerry Finals. In fact a number of clubs within the district including the local club were already busy organising their local talent to compete so it came as a major disappointment when the news filtered through. So hopefully for 2008 this very popular competition which is sponsored by Feale Oil Products, thanks to Con and Kathleen Carmody Larha will resume once again as this is certainly the base in which childrens first introduction to Scor Na Nog and eventually Scor Sinsear.

Scor Sinsear

The local GAA club who were represented in three of the eight catagories and its huge band of enthusiastic supporters travelled to the Aras Phadraig Hall Killarney on Friday evening last March 2nd for the County Senior Finals of Scor and despite the club not winning any County titles it was still a most enjoyable evenings entertainment with the very best of music, song, dance and act and was watched by a huge crowd.
However there was still cause for celebration as our Question Time Team of Nodie Hennessy, Mick Rea and Mike O Connor who had to settle for second place for the second time in three years having been just pipped at the post by last years All Ireland champions Rathmore, qualified for Seacthain Na Gaeilge a Table Quiz that goes on to All Ireland level and they now represent Kerry in the Munster Finals which will take place in Mallow on this Wednesday evening March 7th and we wish our Question time team all the best in their quest for further glory. Anna Maria Tydings who made her own piece of club history by being the first representative of the club to take part in the Solo Singing catagory giving a beautiful rendering of Ballybunion Town and came in in a very creditable second position. The Novelty Act Team of Nora Stack, Anna Maria Tydings, Mattie Quinn, Gerdie O Carroll and Jack Hennessy County champions of three years ago brought down the house with their act Dead Mens Shoes. However they failed to get the verdict from the judges and will have to do it all again.

On behalf of the club we can not forget the great work put in by a number of people to make sure that Scor is kept very much alive in Asdee, Scor Officer Mattie Quinn who has done trojan work down through the years as has Bernie Doran and Kathleen Carmody. Of course we can not forget all the competitors and especially our many supporters who have travelled and supported Scor each year.
Well done also to the North Kerry Board Scor Officer Jackie Walsh who was a very capable
Fear an Ti for the finals in Killarney keeping everything running smoothly on the evening. Jackie has been involved in promoting Scor here in North Kerry and in the County for almost two decades and has put in many hours of voluntary time to ensure that Scor will always remain his top priority, so it was only fitting that the County Scor committee should recognize his marvelous work and on night Liam Cottor Chairman of Scor Ciarrai thanked Jackie for his dedication to Scor and presented the very popular St. Senans man with a beautiful piece of cut glass and finish off a top class night of entertainment
Beale were the only other North Kerry Football Board club involved on the night taking part in both the Figure and Set Dance along with the Recitation. all performed very well but without any success on this occasion.
Trophy presentatition to the County Scor Committee four years ago at a function in the Austin Stack Park Pavilion Tralee organised by Scor Ciarrai where Clubs in the County made presentations of Cups for the various catagories. From the North Kerry Board District, Asdee club donated a cup in honour of the late Mick Hennessy for the Recitation catagory.< The Mick Hennessy Memorial Cup> which will be presented each year in the County Senior Finals to the winner in this catagory.Mick was very much involved in the local Scor and represented the club at two Munster Finals and won numerous County titles at this level.
The Ballydonoghue club also donated a cup in honour of the late Danny Curtin for the Question Time catagory. Danny was also a wonderful clubman and was part of many winning Ballydonoghue Question Time teams in Scor. The North Kerry Football Board also donated a cup for the Instrumental Music catagory.
