McCarthys Insurance Brokers Junior League, Division 4. Asdee B 3-9 Knocknure 2-6

Aside from the contrubition of midfielder Brian O Hanlon and the evergreen John Kennedy who lined out at full forward and was the games top scorer with 6 points, the essential feature of Asdees win over Knocknure who were playing at home was the quality of their play. It saw them maintain an early grip on a most entertaining contest and show character when the home side threatened a comeback. The first half was a fairly evenly contested affair with both side enjoying their share of possession. However a two goal salvo midway through this opening period from Brian O Hanlon and Micheal Hayes had them in command, but Knockanures answer was immediate and a fine goal in the 25th minute saw them back well in contention once again and at the break the score read, Asdee B 2-4 Knocknure 1-3. The trend of the game varied little on resumptiom with Knockanure coming out in this half with all guns blazing and cutting the deficit to just 2 points inside the opening 5 minutes. Then when it seemed that the home side would pull away Micheal Hayes struck for his second goal of the game in the 12th minute for Asdee which put Knockanure on the back pedal once again, in fact by the end of the game this was the score that proved crucial to the end result. However Knockanure kept battling away but were now finding the scores very hard to come- by, whereas Asdee were finding the range and pulled away in the final 6 minutes to finish just about deserving winners. Overall well done to both sides for a very enjoyable game and the only difference between the sides was that the visitors were that little bit more organised and got the goals at crucial times when the game seemed to be slipping away. Along with the afore mentioned Brian O Hanlon and John Kennedy, others to impress were David Ruddle, Mike Long, Sean Stack, John Long, Charlie Dalton, Jack Scanlon and Niall Doran. The appointed Referee failed to turn up on the evening so our local Referee, Patsy Coughlan took charge of the whistle and did an fine job.

Team and scorers, Conor Coughlan, Tomas Walsh, Sean Stack, David Ruddle, John Gorman, Mike Long, John Long, Jack Scanlon,Brian O Hanlon, 1-1, Niall Doran, 1pt, Charlie Dalton, Paul O Hanlon, Joe Holly, John Kennedy,6pts, Micheal Hayes, 2-1. Sub, Kevin O Callaghan for Conor Coughlan.

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE Div. 1.
Moyvane 2-14 Asdee 0-8

Asdee went into this game knowing that a win would see them through to the knockout stages of the competition and certainly at the interval this looked very much within their grasp as they trailed by just 2 points playing some tremendous football and having the lions share of possession during this half, however a goal of a rather soft variety after 2 minutes of the second half by Cathal O Connor for Moyvane stunned Asdee and they simply just fell apart, struggled in terms of possession, were now playing catch up football and when the final whistle sounded the home team were well worth their 12 point victory.Asdee did have a number of scoring opportunities in this half but they were never able to break down a Moyvane defence that was well marshalled by Mossie Mulvihill.Brosnan Park was the venue and from the throw in Asdee took the game to the home side who were struggling to come to terms with a very eager and fired up visiting side who had Eoin Kennedy in devastating form kicking 3 absolutely excellent points inside the opening 11 minutes. However Moyvane got to grips with the game and the teams were tied at 3 points all by the 12th minute, Brian Stack (2) and Jackie Mulvihill on target. The game was now being played at a very fast pace with play swinging from end to end, both sides kicked some bad wides Eoin Kennedy for Asdee and Jackie Mulvihill for the home side exchanged points but it was Moyvane who led at the break by a 2 point margin when John Jack Mulvihill floated over a good point on the stroke of half time. On the changeover even though the visitors were playing against a slight breeze nobody could forecast what was about to happen for the remainder of the half. A harmless looking ball floated in from midfield was misjudged completely and Cathal O Connor who was lurking near goals had the simple task of putting the ball into the empty net.Asdee were now stunned and their play deteriorated for the remainder of the game and instead of putting their shoulder to the wheel and driving on they just struggled and made life difficult for themselves. On the other hand Moyvane dug their heels in and when substitute Micheal Woods crashed the ball to the net for his sides second goal in the 12th minute the game was well over as a contest. Conor Coughlan, Paul O Carroll and Padraig Ruddle did get second half points but it was far from enough and Moyvane won as they pleased in the end. Overall despite a heavy defeat the team can feel very satisfied with their North Kerry League campaign finishing up in a mid table position after holding their own with the bigger clubs in the district. On the day when a lot of things went wrong for Asdee, Eoin Kennedy, Brian O Hanlon, Sean Stack, Brian Coughlan, Padraig Ruddle and to a lesser extent Noel Long and Charles Dalton did well while for Moyvane who gave a rock solid second half display had, Mossie Mulvihill, Denis Kennelly, Jackie Mulvihill, Brian Stack and Cathal O Connor very much to the fore.

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE Div. 1.
Asdee 3-7 Beale 1-12

. With under 2 minutes left in normal time Beale and Asdee were deadlocked for the 7th time in this absorbing North Kerry League Division 1 clash played at Stack Park Ballybinion on Friday evening last and at that stage it looked as if the league points would be divided but Noel Long who had played a captains part throughout led by example and when he won a great ball out on the sideline on the stand side of the field facing the town goals well into injury time he shot high and through and the ball sailed over the crossbar from almost an impossible angle to give Asdee the lead. However it must be said also that Beale had their opportunity to kill the game off between the 18th and 20th minutes when the sides were level but they will rue at least 5 great scoring opportunities that went a begging, a point or two at this stage would have set them up nicely, however credit Asdee they hung in their and came away with a hard earned victory. The game opened with Beale quickly into attack and firmly in command and after kicking at least 3 wides in a row James McMahon finally opened their account with a good score in the 3rd minute. Then in a quick break-a-way after a promising Beale move broke down the ball was dispatched quickly to Noel Long who crashed the ball high into the back of the net, but the home side continued to dominate the contest and further points Tom Hayes and James Mahon had the sides level for the first time in the game after 11 minutes. Points were exchanged by Eoin Kennedy and Cyril Dineen for Asdee and Ian Blake, a massive effort from out on the sideline and Graham Hannon, Beale and after 20 minutes it was still all square. It was end to end stuff at this stage with both sides at full trottle. Then with 6 minutes remaining in the half Conor Coughlan scored a peach of a goal neatly tucking the ball into the corner of Sean Dees net, this seemed to spur on the Seasiders to new heights as they finished the half in fine style. Firstly Karl Purtill took his goal well after the ball rebounded off the crossbar to square up the match once again and Tom Hayes who had a stormer, Ian Blake and Graham Hannon added points and at the interval the score read, Beale 1-8 Asdee 2-2. On resumption Asdee now had the advantage of a stiff breeze and they got off to a blistering start, Eoin Kennedy converted a free, John Doran kicked a superb 45 and Cyril Dineen who caused endless problems for his marker split the uprights and by the 8th minute the sides were deadlocked for the 5th time. Now the rival supporters were in full trottle and got plenty to cheer about as the game ebbed and flowed and every ball was contested as if their lives depended on it. Asdee showed dogged belief throughout and the pre match favourites were unable to shake off a very determined visiting side despite the outstanding displays of both Tom Hayes amd James McMahon. Silly fouls by the Asdee defence left the latter two players in for handy scores as their team led by 2points with 14 minutes gone in this half. Then when it looked as if the home team would pull away, Eoin Kennedy broke free of his marker and left a number of would-be tacklers in his wake and after a 35 meter dash and from close range he billowed the net to send Asdee into a 1 point lead with just 8 minutes left for play. However Beale were having none of it and James McMahon equalised a minute later. Now as we approached the final minutes of a superb contest it was still up for grabs but Beale were applying severe pressure but in fairness to the visiting defence they were holding firm. Eoin Kennedy and Jeremy King exchanged points and again for the 7th time it was still all square. Then when it looked as if the game would remain on level terms up stepped Noel Long to float over the winner deep into injury time. Overall a truly memorable game and well done to both sets of players who treated us to a magnificent contest. Both sides had excellent performers on the evening, for Asdee, Eamon O Connor, Brian Coughlan and Brian O Hanlon were the pick of a well drilled defence, John Doran and Noel Long more than held their own at midfield while in attack Cyril Dineen excelled and he got good support from Padraig Ruddle who roamed the field and Eoin Kennedy. For Beale Tom Hayes and James McMahon were outstanding while Maurice O Connor, Jeremy King, Barry O Mahony, James Buckley and Graham Hannon were all in good form.

NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Ballylongford 0-13 Asdee 0-10.

The expectations of a cracking contest never materialised when those great rivals and fellow parishioiners Asdee and Ballylongford clashed in round 1 of the County Novice Senior Football Championship played in excellent playing conditions at sundrenched O Rahilly Park Ballylongford on Saturday evening last. Both sides had to line out without a number of key players but this cannot be offered as an excuse for the poor standard of football produced on both sides and the free flowing football that the two sides are capable of never came to pass with pulling and dragging being the order of the day. Ballylongford won for the simple reason that they were far more economical in their shooting even though they too like their opponents kicked some terrible wides, another factor in their win was that they had Eddie Mangan who was once again in devastating form and even though he was fairly well marshalled early on, but once he got into his stride there was no stopping the wiley full forward who caused havoc in the Asdee defence every time he won possession. However when Asdee will look back on this game they will rue a number clear goal chances that got away especially during a critical period in the second half when only 3 points separated the sides and 2 guilt edged opportunities were squandered, certainly a goal at that stage could very well have swayed the game in their favour and that final result could have been so much different. The game got underway with Asdee taking the game to the pre-match favourites from the throw-in and after just 4 minutes Padraig Ruddle with the left leg split the uprights.

Tension was mounting even at this early stage and both Eoin Kennedy and Eddie Mangan from very scorable frees were feeling the pressure as their kicks went wide of the target. Mangan made up for his earlier mis when he converted a close in free, Then Asdee were awarded a free, out on the sideline on the 21 meter line and Noel Longs effort went straight and through between the uprights for a magnificent effort.Jason Deegan and Eoin Kennedy exchanged points and after 19 mimutes the sides were still deadlocked for the 3rd time. By now both sides had kicked a number of wides but Bally were now starting to hit the target and points by, Eddie Mangan, 2 and Liam Foley had them in front by the 25th minute. At the other end Cyril Dineen had a goal chance that was put out for a 45 but the same player scored a neat point just on the stroke of half time as the score read, Ballylongford, 0-6 to Asdee 0-4. The home side got off to the perfect start to the second half with Niall Heaphy, Sean Kennelly and Jason Deegan extending the lead to a 5 point margin. John Doran put over an excellent point before Eoin Kennedy from a free after a late challenge on Conor Coughlan had the deficit back to a 3 point game by the 14th minute. At this stage the visitors had their dander up and when both John Doran and Eoin Kennedy had clear goal opportunities at their mercy but the final touch left them down as on both occasions the ball sailed wide of the target. A defensive mistake let in Eddie Mangan for a point to steady the ship only for a quick reply from Mike Long at the other end. The game was now very evenly balanced with play swinging from end to end. In the 24th minute Eoin Kennedy from a free reduced the gap to 2 points and now the game was in the melting pot. However Bally held their nerve and Eddie Mangan (free) and substitute Brendan Mulvihill put 4 points between the sides with under 4 minutes left for play. During those last few minutes the game was still up for grabs but Asdee were in need of a goal which just wouldn’t come and they had to be satisfied with points from Padraig Ruddle and Eoin Kennedy. Eddie Mangan got his 7th point of the game to secure victory and a place in the second round. Both sides had some good performers and for Ballylongford, Eddie Mangan was a class- a- part, Derek Nolan, Liam Foley, Stephen Mulvihill, Pat Kennelly and Jason Deegan all played well, for Asdee Sean Stack, Eoin Kennedy, Brian Coughlan, Noel Long, JohnDoran, Padraig Ruddle and Cyril Dineen did well.

Teams and scorers, Ballylongford, Barthley O Connell, Stephen Mulvihill, Pat Kennelly, Cathal O Carroll, Joe McCarthy, Liam Foley, 1pt, Eamon Flavin, Shane O Hanlon, Derek Nolan, Brendan Bambury, Niall Heaphy, 1pt, Maurice O Halloran, Sean Kennelly, 1pt, Eddie Mangan, 7pts, Jason Deegan, 2pts. Subs, Mossie Kenrick for Eamon Flavin, Brendan Mulvihill, 1pt for Niall Heaphy. Asdee, James Kelly, Eamon O Connor, Brian O Hanlon, Sean Stack, Mike Long, 1pt, Charlie Dalton, Thomas Mulvihill, John Doran, 1pt Noel Long, 1pt, Micheal Walsh, Conor Coughlan, Padraig Ruddle, 2pts, Brian Coughlan, Cyril Dineen, 1pt, Eoin Kennedy, 4pts. COUNTY LEAGUE.
Asdee 2-6 St. Senans 2-9

This was a case of not taking those scoring opportunities when presented which proved to be Asdees downfall in this very competitive but sometimes very fiery and often robust County League Division 5 encounter against St Senans which was played in perfect underfoot conditions at Mountcoal on Sunday last. Another factor in that defeat was that a very below par team performance left the visitors with far too much to do in the second half, but in fairness in that second half they completely upped their performance and with a little bit of luck could so very easily have got something out of the game. Asdee had to start without the services of a couple of regulars and had to face into a slight breeze in the first half. St. Senans were first into the attack and by the 8th minute had gone into a commanding 3 point lead. Eoin Kennedy from a free opened Asdees account after 12 minutes but it was still St Senans who were in command and Asdee were really living on scraps. In the 15th minute Jason Brown dealt Asdee a big blow when he got in for a goal which was quickly followed by a Padraig Somers point as the home side were laying siege to the visitors goals and whatever scoring opportunities that came Asdees way were well wide of the target. Noel Long who was Asdees best player in that opening period showed great determination to burst his way through to split the uprights from close range which was followed by an Eoin Kennedy free. However Senans reply was immediate and points from Johnny Daughton and the outstanding Brendan O Connell had the home team well ahead coming up to the break. An injury to Paul O Carroll who had to be replaced in that opening half had the game held up for some considerable time and it was in that extra few minutes that Asdee were given a lifeline when after a well worked move that Noel Long got on the end of and finished up in the net. Half time Asdee 1-3 St. Senans 1-6. On resumption Asdee came out in a most determined manner and took the game to their opponents and once again despite being well on top the wides were mounting and in St Senans first attack of this half in the 8th minute Alan Doran easily outfoxed the visiting defence to plant the ball in the net. Some positional switches that were made before and during the break were now starting to work for Asdee and none more so than Padraig Ruddles move to the edge of the square where he caused plenty problems for the home defence with his superb fielding. Eoin Kennedy from a free cut the deficit to 5 points in the 9th minute as play was now swinging from to end. In the 14th minute a high delivery by Brian Coughlan was well fielded by Padraig Ruddle and as he turned he was upended and immediately the Referee pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped Liam McElligott who saw his well struck effort saved brilliantly by a diving John Somers, however the ball rebounded out and substitute Mike Long was in to boot the ball into the net. It was now a 2 point game as we approached the final 15 minutes. Asdee were now on a roll and when Eoin Kennedy got inside his marker he saw his well directed shot come back off the butt of the far upright, certainly a let off for the home side as at this stage the visitors were on top. But once again in the game Brendan O Connell showed the coolness of a veteran to slot over 2 very important points. Then in a hectic finish it took some great defending by the St Senans defence to deny Asdee of the goal that would have given them something out of the game.Overall despite a poor first half display the team as a whole showed great spirit in the second period and none more so than Brian Coughlan, Thomas Mulvihill and Noel Long who also made a huge impact when moved to midfield. John Doran did well at midfield and in attack Padraig Ruddle starred on the verge of the square in the second half, Eoin Kennedy and Micheal Walsh. Final Score, St Senans 2-9 Asdee 2-6.

Team and scorers, James Kelly, Eamon O Connor, Brian O Hanlon, Sean Stack, Thomas Mulvihill, Noel Long, 1-1, Brian Coughlan, John Doran, Padraig Ruddle, 1pt, Charles Dalton, Micheal Walsh, Liam McElligott, Paul O Carroll, Conor Coughlan, Eoin Kennedy, 4pts. Subs Mike Long,1gl, for Paul O Carroll, inj, Dan Kearney for Micheal Walsh.

McCarthys Ins. Brokers Junior League Div 4.
Brosna 1-16 Asdee0-7

Our Junior footballers made the long journey to Brosna on Tuesday evening last to take on the local sides B team in round 1 of the McCarthys Insurance Brokers Junior League, Division 4 and after a rather one sided affair it was the home side who emerged victorious with plenty to spare, Brosna 1-16 Asdee0-7. The opening half saw Brosna on the attack from the throw in and it was clearely evident from an early stage of the game that they were much more skilful and certainly lacked nothing in determination either and by the interval had chalked up an impressive tally of 1-13 without reply. On resumption they continued to take the game to the visitors and added a further 1-3 before taking their leg off the pedal which allowed Asdee take advantage of registering 7 points as their final tally for the evening. Overall even though Brosna fielded plenty of experienced players that played at a much higher grade than our lads and as a result we were always struggling to come to terms with that situation. However even though this game was well out of our reach at the short whistle Asdee never threw in the towel and battled away even against all the odds. It was always a case of backs against the wall all through and in defence, Brian O Hanlon, Thomas Mulvihill and Sean Stack did all that was asked of them. Danny Finucane and Jack Scanlon kept plugging away at midfield while in attack, John Long and the evergreen John Kennedy tried hard.

Final Score, Brosna B 1-16 Asdee 0-7. Team and scorers, Tomas Walsh, Mike long, 1pt, Sean Stack, Kenneth Tydings, Thomas Mulvihill, Brian O Hanlon, 1pt, David Ruddle, Danny Finucane, Jack Scanlon, Paul O Hanlon, John Long, 2pts, Niall Doran, Dan Kearney, 2pts, Liam Doyle, John Kennedy, 2pts. Subs Joe Holly for Kenneth Tydings, Tom Tydings, Jermiah Tydings, Padraig Buckley.

COUNTY LEAGUE.
Asdee 2-7 Templenoe 0-4

A powerful second half display saw Asdee pick up their opening points in the 2008 Credit Union County League, Division 5 game played at Walsh Park on Sunday last where they defeated a fancied Templenoe side who could never come to terms with a far more determined and slicker Asdee team who upped the tempo of their game after the break and leave their poor form of the previous 2 games well behind to record a fully deserved victory. This was without doubt a wonderful team performance with every member fully determined to banish past results in this competition. The opening half saw very little between two evenly matched teams as play swung from end to end, however it was a drab affair despite perfect playing conditions as both side struggled for any kind of fluency in their play. Both sides kicked some terrible wides but especially the visitors who were depending very much on their corner forward Patrick Palmer for scores who kicked their opening point from all of 40 meters in the 4th minute. Liam McElligott after a dazzling run was pulled down and from the resultant free Eoin Kennedy made up for his earlier miss when he tapped over a 21 meter free. At this stage leading up to the end of the first quarter play became very scrappy with needless frees being given away on both sides. However the game took a dramatic turn in the 10th minute when after a good build up by the home side was gathered by midfielder John Doran and after his kick for a score was half blocked the ball spilled in front of the goals and in like a flash nipped Eoin Kennedy who billowed the net from close range. Two pointed frees by Templenoe saw the half time score reading, Asdee 1-1 Templenoe 0-3. On resumption Asdee came out with all guns blazing and after kicking 2 further wides the home side were finally hitting the target. Cyril Dineen who was revelling in his role of full forward set up Eoin Kennedy who scored a massive point from 40 meters out on the sideline which really lifted the spirit of the team to a new high. John Doran and Padraig Ruddle were now dominating midfield and it was paying off with plwnty good ball going into the forwards who were now availing of most scoring opportunities. Micheal Walsh who was working hard at centre forward placed Paul O Carroll for another capital score after 6 minutes. The home side were now on top in almost every sector of the field, and in any of the rare Templenoe attacks of the second half, Tom Mulvihill, Noel Long and Brian Coughlan formed a half back line that stood solid. Danny Finucane was unlucky not to get in for a goal but in fairness the visiting keeper made a timely save in the 9th minute. Conor Coughlan who was introduced as a second half substitute made his presence felt when he split the uprights from 35 meters with virtually his first touch of the ball after 17 minutes and a minute later he turned provider when he set up Liam McElligott to put their side 5 points ahead.James Kelly who had very much to deal with over the hour was called into action when he saved on the line in the 22nd minute. Liam McElligott got his second point of the half after 24 minutes that was followed a minute later by a softish enough goal, Eoin Kennedy shot for a point dropped in the Templenoe goalmouth which deceived both keeper and defenders and this time Danny Finucane had the simple task of edging the ball into the net. Eoin Kennedy who was the games top scorer with 1-3 got his final point as the game entered its final moments, however the visitors had the final say when their midfielder Shane Cremins got his sides only score of the half on the sound of the final whistle. Overall a well contested encounter with the home side fully deserving of that long awaited victory in this competition.

Team and scorers, James Kelly, Charles Dalton, Brian O Hanlon, Sean Stack, Brian Coughlan, Noel long, Thomas Mulvihill, John Doran, Padraig Ruddle, Paul O Carroll, 1pt, Micheal Walsh, Liam McElligott, 2pts, Danny Finucane, 1gl, Cyril Dineen, Eoin Kennedy,1-3.Subs, Mike Long for Charles Dalton, Conor Coughlan,1pt, for Micheal Walsh, Dan Kearney for Danny Finucane.

COUNTY LEAGUE.
Ballyduff 3-13 Asdee 0-7

Misery for Asdee and joy for Ballyduff at the end of a one sided Credit Union County League Division 5 game played at Ballyduff on Sunday evening last. In perfect underfoot conditions an understrength home side produced a brilliant display to keep their unbeaten County League campaign intact, and none more so than their star corner forward and former Kerry Minor Mikie Boyle who teased and tormented the Asdee defence who had no answer to his silken skills He contributed 2-5 of his sides total and his second goal during the final quarter was well worth the entrance fee alone, a long ball floated in had Boyle under pressure and knowing that if he caught the ball he could very well have been blocked down, however instead he neatly flicked the ball to the net, certainly a master at his work. This was a lethargic display by Asdee whose form up to now in the competition has been a mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous as the team are playing only in fits and starts and the feeling within the camp is that the team are capable of playing much better but they are simply not getting it together where it matters most, on the field of play. On this occasion they were outplayed for much of the game by a far more confident and determined outfit that easily brushed aside the visitors weak challenge. Ballyduff dominated in most sectors of the field and gave Asdee a lesson in not only football, but also teamwork and were it not for the superb saves by James Kelly in both halves the scoreline could very well have been much more. The opening half saw Asdee get off to a good start, Eoin Kennedy from the throw in sent a high delivery goalwards and in a crowded goalmouth Danny Finucane rose highest to punch over, a minute later Cyril Dineen had a great goal opportunity and after doing everything right he saw his powerful shot skid across the goals and inches wide of the far upright, certainly a great opportunity missed. Ballyduff settled and in a quick break the Asdee defence were split open and Man of the Match Mikie Boyle kicked 2 splendid points, the visiting keeper was at full stretch to tip over the second which was destined for the top corner of the net. Danny Finucane cut the deficit to a single point again by the 14th minute, points were then exchanged by Noel Long and Mikie Boyle and as we approached the 24th minute even though we were under pressure the game was very much alive. Then a lapse of concentration by the visitors defence saw a quick free by Barry O Grady reach Sean Costello who calmly slotted the ball to the back of the net for a killer blow. Ballyduff finished the half with 3 further points to leave the score at the break, Ballyduff 1-7 Asdee 0-3. Asdee started the second half as they did the first, Paul O Carroll and Eoin Kennedy,2 slotting over good points from play in the opening 9 minutes. However Ballyduff got stuck in again and without being over exerted dominated play kicking a further 6 points and in fairness this game was long over as a contest before Mikie Boyle struck for his two second half goals in the 15th and 20th minute. This was not an encouraging display by Asdee as they struggled in too many positions on the field, however on saying that one would not be meeting a team of the calibre of Ballyduff every week, they are a strong side with plenty talent in their squad and if they can be kept together for the remainder of this competition they will be serious contenders for promotion. On the day James Kelly despite been beaten 3 times had his usual solid game in goals, Noel Long and Thomas Mulvihill were the pick of an overworked defence, Padraig Ruddle had his moments at midfield, especially during the second half while up front, Eoin Kennedy, Liam McElligott and to a lesser extent Danny Finucane threatened any danger.

Next up will be Pat Spillane Managed Templenoe at Walsh Park on the weekend of April 5/6th.

Team and scorers, James Kelly, Eamon O Connor, Brian O Hanlon, Charles Dalton, Thomas Mulvihill, Noel Long, capt,1pt, Brian Coughlan, John Doran, Padraig Ruddle,1pt, Paul O Carroll, 1pt, Conor Coughlan, Liam McElligott, Cyril Dineen, Danny Finucane,2pts, Eoin Kennedy, 2pts.SubsMicheal Walsh for Conor Coughlan, Sean Stack for Eamon O Connor, Dan Kearney for Brian O Hanlon, Hugh O Donoghue for Charles Dalton. Final Score. Ballyduff 3-13 Asdee 0-7.

Before the game a minutes silence was observed for the late Paddy White of Asdee East who wore the Blue and Gold of Asdee during the 50s.

COUNTY LEAGUE.
Churchill 0-9 Asdee 1-3.

Our senior footballers of which much was expected of going into this game with Churchill in Rd. 1 of the Credit Union County League, Division 5 played at The Spa on Sunday last and after some very encouraging results up to now in the North Kerry League Division 1 the team as a whole played well below par and as a result suffered the concequences. The game itself was a very scrappy affair with pulling and dragging the order of the day and certainly an over fussy Referee didnt help matters either with the game having too many holds ups which prevented a free flowing game that both teams were capable of. The game had 13 scores in all with 9 of those coming from frees. In fact Asdees only score from play came in the 21st minute when Noel Long blazed the ball to the net while 6 of Churchills points came from placed balls. The game got underway with little or no wind but underfoot conditions were a little bit sticky, however the opening exchanges were fairly even but in fairness the Asdee defence made life a little easier on the home forwards giving away some needless frees which was duly converted by their impressive full forward, Shane McMahon and after 10 minutes despite kicking a number of bad wides led by 3pts to nil. Asdee also had their moments but in fairness were playing catch up football for long periods of this half, however they finally got on the scoresheet after a wonderful movement that was started in defence and ended up with team captain Noel Long from close range who billowed the net after 21 minutes to level up matters. Eoin Kennedy from a free put the visitors ahead in the 26th minute only for Shane McMahon to level up the game again on the stroke of the half time whistle. Churchill 0-4 Asdee 1-1. Within 1 minute on resumption Churchill were back in front again when McMahon kicked his 5th successive point all from frees. 2 minutes later Asdee should and could have gone in front, Eoin Kennedy won a great ball out on the wing kicked a crossfield ball where John Doran was lurking and with an open goal at his mercy he sidefooted the ball just inches wide, but in fairness the sticky conditions didnt help the controlling of the ball. At the other end the home team widened the margin to 2 points which could so easily been more only for a marvelous double save from Asdee keeper James Kelly. Eoin Kennedy and Paul O Carroll both from frees cut the deficit to a single point by the 24th minute and even though Asdee were struggling a little at this stage the game was very much alive but it was still the home team who were controlling the game and added a further point from play. Asdee did have another goal opportunity that once again went to the wrong side of the upright in the dying moments but the home side made sure of victory with an injury time point to secure the valuable County League points. Overall the result was disappointing but maybe expectations were a little too high going into this encounter, but one should not overlook this Churchill side who are one of the favourites to gain promotion from this division, so maybe its not all doom and gloom as there are still plenty of league points to be picked up and in fairness the team had simply a bad day at the office and im sure will get back on track again. On the day when a lot of players underperformed, only Noel Long, James Kelly, Eoin Kennedy, Brian Coughlan and Liam McElligott impressed.

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE.
Castleisland Desmonds 1-10 Asdee 0-9.

For more than threequarters of this pulsating Farrell Bros. Quarry Products, Sponsored North Kerry League Division 1, Section A, Round 3 game played in very heavy underfoot conditions at Walsh Park on Sunday last, recently crowned North Kerry Championship winners Castleisland Desmonds who fielded no less than 10 of that successful outfit were made work hard for victory against an Asdee side who would just not give up with as good a battling performance that the club has ever produced. The game was very much alive with under 10 minutes remaining with Asdee enjoying plenty possession and just a point in arrears, however a quick break out of defence saw the ball reach the unmarked John Brennan who drew the advancing keeper and neatly chipped the ball into the empty net. This was to prove the crucial score of the game and even though the home side kept plugging away the shock result that looked on for the bigger part of the game suddenly evaporated. So in the end it was that bit of craft and experience which never allowed panic to set in that was the main factor in Desmonds win. The Castleisland boys started in a very positive mood playing against a stiff wind that blew directly downfield and threatened to over run the home side early on, it took a marvelous save from James Kelly the Asdee custodion to deny them what looked like a certain goal in the second minute, five wides in a row before they eventually got off the mark when wing back John McGaley dashed up field to cancel out Cyril Dineens 1st minute point. The visitors were still calling the shots but were finding it hard to break down a teak tough Asdee defence in which full back Brian O Hanlon excelled. Eoin Kennedy got the first of his 4 points in the 14th minute when he kicked an inispirational score from all of 40 meters which was followed by 2 pointed frees by Paul O Carroll and point number 5 of the half for the home side came in the 23 minute when Kennedy put over another beauty as Asdee had raced into a 4 point lead and had the pre match favourites worried. However after the home side had enjoyed plenty possession their play now became sloppy with some good moves breaking down as a result of bad ball handling. Desmonds took advantage and kicked 4 unanswered points and at the interval the margin was down to a single point, Asdee 0-5 Desmonds 0-4. Within one minute of the restart John Brennan who was later was to be the hero of the hour for the visitors landed the equaliser and 7 minutes later they took the lead for the first time in the game. However Asdee got stuck in again and after a quality move that saw Eoin Kennedy fouled who duly kicked over to level matters again in the 13th minute. Then came what was easily the best score of the game , substitute Micheal Walsh gained possession in his defensive position, careered his way forward avoiding would-be tacklers and from 30 meters out split the uprights. The home team were celebrating as Desmonds took a quick kick out that eventually found its way to John Brennan who easily found the already mentioned empty net. Asdee were rattled and conceeded 4 further points as Desmonds led 1-10 to 0-7 by the 26th minute. However the home side once again showed their battling qualities with Eoin Kennedy and John Doran kicking a point a piece as the clock ticked down and it took a tremendous save from the visiting keeper Ger Reidy to deny John Dorans pile driver from close range and it was a much relieved Desmonds side that marched off the field when Referee Pa Foley blew for full time to savour that hard earned victory. Overall even in defeat Asdee can feel very pleased with the display and can now look forward to the opening County League game away to Churchill on Sunday next. On the day Brian O Hanlon,Keeper, James Kelly, Thomas Mulvihill, Brian Coughlan, John Doran, Eoin Kennedy, Cyrill Dineen and Paul O Carroll were best but in fairness everybody played their part in nearly causing the shock of the season so far.

BUILDSTONE LEAGUE. Div. 1 Rd.2, Section A, Listowel Emmets 1-8 Asdee 0-4

Another piece of sporting history was made on Friday night last April 29th at Frank Sheehy Park where Listowel Emmets and Asdee clashed in round 2, Division 1, Section A of the Buildstone League to become the first teams to play a competitive game under lights at the Listowel venue. It was certainly a memorable occasion and well done to the Listowel Club who have now facilities second to none. There is no doubt but that the better team won and even for the fact that the home team were without several of their first team players, their replacements were more than adequate which showed the strength in debt that the club can boast of. Certainly the the experience of playing top flight football every week was a major factor in this latest win but in fairness the final scoreline of 1-8 to 0-4 did not do justice to a very determined Asdee side who themselves were understrength as they matched their opponents in many areas of the field but even though they won a reasonable amount of possession they were always struggling to get away from their opponents and found scores hard to come by. Another blow to whatever chance Asdee had of winning was dashed in injury time in the first half when a harmless looking ball floated in by Brian McMahon and should have been dealt easily by the defence but instead ended up in the back of the net for what proved crucial to the end result. The game itself was spoiled by a strong gusty wind that blew diagonally towards the scoreboard end and the home side aided by the elements had much the better of the early exchanges and after kicking a number of bad wides opened the scoring in the 4th minute, however a minute later Eoin Kennedy from a free into the wind got his side on the scoresheet. Emmets continued to dominate that opening quarter but were off target on a number of occasions, but after 8 minutes had gone into a 3pt lead. But back came the visitors and Paul O Carroll set up Conor Coughlan for a good point followed by another from an acute angle by Eoin Kennedy and Asdee were back in business again. Listowel weathered the storm and finished with a florish adding a point to that injury time goal. Half Time Emmets 1-5 Asdee 0-2. On resumption Emmets having now to face into the breeze were quick to settle down and took the game to Asdee who were backpeddling for the bigger part of this half. The visitors kept battling away but were finding the scores hard to come, this was due to some sloppy handling and good defensive work by the Listowel defence who had Jimmy Barrett and Shane Quinn very prominent. Scores were at a premium in this half with Emmets adding 3pts to Asdees solitary single score from a pointed free by Eoin Kennedy. Overall even in defeat Asdee played reasonably well and can be happy with their performance, certainly playing the bigger known teams can sometimes be a daunting experience but can also benifit the team in the long run.On the night everybody did their best but the names of Noel Long, Eoin Kennedy, Charles Dalton, Brian O Hanlon, Cyril Dineen, Keeper James Kelly who pulled off a number of good saves over the hour and Conor Coughlan untill he retired injured deserve special mention. It was great to see Hugh O Donoghue back in the club colours once again. Hugh was a prominent member of our underage winning sides and will be a great addition to the squad for the year ahead.

Final Score. Emmets 1-8 Asdee 0-4.

BUILDSTONE LEAGUE. Div. 1 Rd.1, Section A, Asdee 1 13 Ballydonoghue 0 4.

Maybe it was only the opening round of the Buildstone League and the opposition maybe a little understrength on the day but that cannot take away from a magnificent team performance from a fired up Asdee side who showed fierce determination, great team spirit and most of all the eagerness to grind out a victory that was certainly well overdue and played at Walsh Park on Sunday last. I suppose overall Asdee were always in the driving seat and a step ahead of their opponents throughtout but on saying that there were a a few crucial moments in the game that helped swing the game in Asdees favour, certainly an opportunist goal from Paul O Carroll just on the stroke of half time and a magnificent penalty save in the 25th minute of the second half by a diving Asdee keeper James Kelly were to prove stumbling blocks to Ballydonoghues chances of victory, furthermore the home defence ably marshalled by team captain Noel Long who excelled throughtout, John Doran and Padraig Ruddle held sway at midfield while in a fast moving attack Cyril Dineen teased and tormented an overworked Ballydonoghue side who had no answer to his roving tactics that yeilded 4 superb points and who also set up many other scores for his teammates. The home side who had to face a stiffish breeze in the opening half had to withstand early Ballydonoghue pressure and but for some wayward shooting by the visiting forwards they could and should have built up an early lead, in fact they could so easily have got the opening goal of the game but some sloppy play and good defending by Asdee led to a let off for the home side. However Asdee weathered that early storm and in the 6th minute Liam McElligott opened the games scoring with a well taken point. Ballydonoghue were still finding the scores hard to come by and Padraig Ruddle with a dazzling run down the stand side of the field fired over to put the home side ahead by 2pts by the 14th minute. Ballydonoghue had the sides all square 2 minutes later when Ger O Gorman and Paul Kennelly registered their sides opening scores. But back came Asdee and Cyril Dineen (2) and Paul O Carroll put daylight between the sides again coming up to the break. Then on the stroke of that half time whistle Eoin Kennedy who in fairness had been well held by Ballydonoghue corner back Daniel Riordan but on this occasion showed his tremendous skill, cut inside his marker, spotted a lurking Paul O Carroll bearing down on goals who gratefully received the pinpoint pass and finished the ball to the net in fine style and with it the sound of the half time whistle as Asdee led on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2. On resumption Ballydonoghue made a number of alterations to their team and in that opening half were to put the Asdee defence under pressure but again were guilty of bad shooting in front of goals, however substitute Eddie Houlihan with virtually his first touch of the ball fired over from close range. However Asdee held firm and by the 17th minute had gone into a commanding lead of 1-9 to 0-3 with Eoin Kennedy (2) Cyril Dineen and Padraig Ruddle on target. Paul Kennelly in the 21st minute pulled a point back for the visitors and when his side were thrown a lifeline in the 24th minute in the form of a penalty after an Asdee defender fouled the ball, but up stepped Padraig Bunyan who saw his well struck shot to the corner brilliantly saved by a diving James Kelly. Immediatly the home side struck again as Liam McElligott after a good run split the uprights from 30 meters. Further points by Eoin Kennedy (2) and Cyril Dineen put the game well out of Ballydonoghues reach to fashion a well deserved victory. Overall a deserving win for the home side and if they can repeat this performance for the remainder of the competition they may well make the bigger named teams look up, however they would not want to get carried away with this result as there are some sterner tests ahead.Besides those already mentioned Danny Finucane, Brian O Hanlon, Conor Coughlan,Eoin Kennedy and Eoin O Carroll all impressed for Asdee.Martin O Mahony, Daniel Riordan, Mike Scanlon, Paul Kennelly and substitute Eddie Houlihan tried hard for Ballydonoghue. Before the game there was a minutes silence observed for the late Denis Walsh of Craughdarrig who died in Canada. Denis was an accomploshed footballer in his day having played and won honours with Kerry, Shannon Rangers and his native Craughdarrig. Ar dheis dea go raibh na hAinimi dheilis.
